Year 10 students visited Manchester Metropolitan University yesterday to celebrate the successful completion of their six-week mentoring project with GM Higher’s Tolu Oyesola. The purpose of the mentoring programme was to equip students with essential study skills, goal-setting techniques, and effective learning strategies. By focusing on these areas, the project aimed to cultivate a positive attitude towards learning, help students improve their academic behaviour, and ultimately prepare them for future educational challenges.
Throughout the six weeks, students engaged in a variety of activities designed to enhance their time management, organisational, and problem-solving skills. The mentoring sessions also provided a valuable opportunity for the students to reflect on their personal academic goals and identify the necessary steps to achieve them. The project not only aimed to boost their confidence in learning but also to encourage a mindset of continuous improvement and academic success.
The visit to Manchester Metropolitan University was an integral part of the programme, offering students a chance to reflect on their progress and apply the lessons they had learned. It also allowed them to explore potential progression routes after Year 11, whether that involves pursuing further education, vocational training, or entering the workforce.
During the visit, students enjoyed a guided tour of the campus, where they were introduced to the wide range of facilities and resources available to university students. The tour provided them with a real sense of what university life could be like and helped to clarify the higher education experience. In addition, students had the opportunity to speak directly with the university student ambassadors, who shared their experiences and insights into university life, providing valuable first-hand knowledge about student support services, clubs, societies, and academic expectations.
The day concluded with a ceremony where each student was presented with a certificate to recognise their commitment and achievements throughout the mentoring project. This was followed by a questions and answers session, where students could ask any questions they had about university, career choices, or the transition from school to further education.
Overall, the visit to Manchester Metropolitan University was a rewarding and inspiring experience for all involved. It provided the students with an invaluable insight into higher education, encouraged them to think about their future, and gave them the tools and confidence they need to continue their academic journey with a positive outlook.
