GIFT Team
At Mount Saint Joseph we have an active team of students who contribute to the spiritual life of the school; they are known as the GIFT team and referred to as “student chaplains”. The GIFT team is open to students of all faiths and we actively welcome people from all parts of our school community.
Student chaplains help to prepare and promote the different chaplaincy based events throughout the year.
Primary Outreach Work
The chaplains are involved in visiting our feeder primary schools to look at and work upon different liturgical themes. On these visits we involve student chaplains in the work and running of the session. This often means working with small groups or even helping to lead sessions. The involvement of students is popular with parents, teachers, and the primary school children, and the student chaplains themselves enjoy this aspect of their role.
The outreach work is continually growing, with new avenues and opportunities constantly being discovered. The work we do also varies from location to location.
Primary Chaplaincy Days
Three times a year we host all the feeder primary school chaplains for a themed day in the conference suite. This has been established over several years and now they are very well attended. The MSJ student chaplains take a lead role in delivering sessions and assist Mr Haughton throughout the day. The day always concludes with the celebration of Mass.
Charity Events
Student chaplains assist in the delivery of charity events throughout the year.
- Christmas Food Appeal – As a community we collect as many tins of food as possible which will be donated to the Destitution Project based at the Victoria Hall in Bolton, which supports refugees and asylum seekers.
- Macmillan Coffee Morning – An extremely popular whole school event where we encourage students to put aside their healthy eating for one day to indulge in various sweet treats and raise money to support Macmillan.
- St Joseph’s Penny – The annual charity appeal run by the Diocese of Salford through its schools and colleges to support the work of charities within the local area working with the disadvantaged.
School Council
The student council meet every week to discuss matters of importance to the running of the school community.
The student council is made up of the House Captains from each of the three houses: Mandela, Shakespeare and Jenner, with two students from each year group per house. These House Captains are elected for a full year, and their weekly meetings as a student council have clear agenda designed by school leaders to drive progress from the students’ perspective. Here, real issues are discussed and taken to SLT, issues such as rewards, attendance, activities and facilities that are available to the pupils. A recent example of the input of the student council is the rewards that can be purchased using Premium Banking Points that students accrue for excellence in lessons and around school.
The student council plays a vital role in the running, organisation and on-going improvement of the school and is a respected position of responsibility within our school. Please see the House Captain Job Description for a full breakdown of these responsibilities.
